Malaysia since its inception in 1996 until present. Besides supervising music research and composition, one of Chan’s focuses has been coaching jazz piano majors. From 2015 onwards, he explored into the difficult experience of jazz piano students, which led to his current research on pedagogy, that could best be understood by the phrase “piano lesson as cultural shock”. Doctor of Literature in musicology from Osaka University, and Master as well as Bachelor of Education in music from Kyoto University of Education. His overseas exchange includes holding the position of a research professor in Kumamoto University 2016-2017 and visiting lecturer in Kunitachi College of Music 2004, Japan. A research writer and supervisor of a wide range of topic covering indigenous music, popular music history, Malayness and intercultural pedagogy.
